I'll jump into these glorious waters of nostalgia. Here's what I wrote 15 years ago about hearing Ballroom Blitz for the first time in 1973 when I was
16.
I'd just gone on shift at the Murco garage opposite the Husky Dog and Pete Beddard was smoothing down his grey jacket in the hope of flogging an old Ford Popular to an even older punter. I was putting out fresh water for cleaning windscreens when I heard it for the first time. The radio in the red M.G. was keeping the forecourt company and Rosco hadn't long kicked off the week's Roundtable. We were due for a SWEET release, but the sound that hit us was about to become the stuff of legend. BALLROOM BLITZ chugger chuggered it's way into the hearts and spinal columns of all that heard it. It made Blockbuster sound a little sedate by comparison and Tony Blackburn slated it for pandering to violence. He was just lucky he didn't stop off for petrol that night - he'd have left in a Ford Popular. Blackburn's condemnation soured my mood for the evening, but ten minutes with Bev Harris was enough to put that right. He carries out his duty

I first heard Sweet after hanging out with my sixteen year old cousin, I was just a little kid. He had the "Desolation Blvd" album (US version) and I
was hooked from then on. I remember going rollerskating, back in the day, and "Fox On The Run" and "Ballroom Blitz" were always the
favorites with the skaters. Smart group of kids!! I still remember asking my parents for the "Give Us A Wink" album for Christmas. Glad to say that
my parents bought it for me!! I always wish I could have attended a Sweet concert, but being a little kid, that wasn't an option. Last summer, I got to see
Steve Priest's Sweet and that was a dream come true. I took my daughter with me and had the best time ever. Okay, I'm done rambling!! LOL!!

Hey Sweet zuni, that's not 'ramblings', that's interesting to read. If you want rambling I could go on and on with little memories that pop
into my head from time to time!
At a gig in Farnham I think? I gave Mick Tucker a £50 pound note to pass on to Kevin Smith for something to do with Andy. He said " I haven't seen one of those in a while!" It's just some thing that sticks in the back of my mind.
I get better and better looking every day...... I cant wait for tomorrow!!

I think I'm an exception to the rule here. I was born in 1971.
The only way I heard Sweet in the 70's was because
I remember hearing Blockbuster and Funny Funny a lot. My brother had a copy of Fever Of Love (no hit in Holland) and I really love this song. In later years I played this one a lot. In The Netherlands Sweet "disappeared" In 1979. Around 1988 my brother bought a copy of the "Starke Zeiten" CD in Germany. (At that time the music of Sweet was very hard to get over here). I went a lot over to his place and listened to it. Then in 1989 Sweet performed in Apeldoorn at a Golden Oldies festival. This was broadcasted on national radio. And I was hooked.
Love Is Like Oxygen isn't on the "Starke Zeiten" CD. This one is my favourite. I spend a lot of time in getting this song. I even bought the single version of the "Live At The Marquee" album.
I started to collect as much Sweet stuff I could lay my hands on. In 1991 I got in touch with Hans Van Vuuren of Double Dutch records. Trough him I got the "Cut Above The Rest" fanzines (And many Sweet CD's). (I later discovered that Hans made copy's of the fanzine and sold these, so later I ordered these directly from Cos).
The first Sweet gig (after 1989) was 1992 in Baarlo, I was there. And have been to many ASS gigs since then. I never saw the original 4. And also never saw Brian's version live. Brian never toured in
Holland. Some people say this was due to the famous "Belgium" incident
According to the same people, this also counts for Steve. I don't know if it's true. (This was also stated
on Dutch National radio, when Andy and Mick played
Anyway , I can't
really say that Sweet "changed" my life but sure made (and makes) it better.
THERE COMES A TIME IN EVERY MAN'S LIFE

As fare I remember I heard Sweet right from the start, but was more to Deep Purple until Blockbuster, there was no turning back. Special when Ballroom Blitz came, I remember I was on vacation and was in love with the daughter, and she had a turntable and Ballroom Blitz, I remember not much from the week I was on holiday, only Ballroom Blitz, the girl and her room.;-) At school, most of my school class was Sweet Fans a few were to Slade, Donny Osmond and David Casside, we gave them a hard time. I never stop listing to Sweet but the came in the background when I was older and got children. In the mid-80 `s, it was popular with record fair, and I rediscovered Sweet, a new sweet world was opened! There was so much I don`t have, it has been an expensive hobby, but very nice! eBay !!!! One of the really great moments was when I discovered the Live at the maquee db album in the local HMV. I pulled it off the shelf. I could barely steer the car home, I was so curious. and I was not disappointed, the album was and still is SUPERB ! has been to 4 concerts with Brian and I don`t know how many with Andy.
Did sweet changed my life ? undoubtedly !!!!
After I die I
shall return to earth as the doorkeeper of a bordello and
I won't let any one of you in

Oh dear, here we go; let's see what I can pull out of the air...
Hearing CoCo on my neighbours radio, the older girl with the pink polo neck (plus chest) dancing to this incredibly sexy song. Buying Little Willy as my 1st 45; writing my name on it and taking it to the youth club, very grown up and very rude. Wig Wam Bam, played all over Holland and still sends a tingle down my spine when it starts. Blockbuster coming out in the Uk and taking it to my mates in Holland over christmas. Listening to the new chart rundown in the school playground at lunchtime and Hellraiser STILL not No1. It was in Melody Maker though! Hearing Rampage on Radio Luxemberg YEARS before it came out as a single..or so it seemed. Listening to Ed Stewart around Andy's birthday, knowing the new single would be played for him. Seeing SFA in a Record Mirror and ordering it (£2.30 incl P&P) and then seeing it in the shops...waiting for it to come through the mail. It had a creased corned in posting. TOTP appearances, the talk of the playground the next day. My Dad shouting "They're homosexual!" at the TV. The first time I played the single of Fox, bought unheard of course, expecting the album version. The lovely sexy blue and orange swirly sleeve. Cycling round the record stores in town asking for the new single, knowing full well it wasn't out yet. In my darkest hours; finding the only reason to live was to hear the next sweet single. Weird now! Seeing Off the Record in the shops and stroking it's sleeve. Going to Hammersmith, having no idea how monumental that moment would be. Learing the band were splitting up; "artistic differences?!?!?" getting the Glam Rock videos and being able to see sweet on demand First time I saw latter day Brian live; harrowing. Finding this site. Seeing ASS at the Roundhouse for the 1st time and having a whale of a time! Sweet changing my life? Most definately!
"Burn On The Flame!"

So it's not just my life that has been changed because of Sweet? Some great incite from other Sweet fans as to the impact the band had made on their lives.
The music was obviously the biggest part in any influence on myself but the image also played a big part too. The fact that they were not taken seriously by alot of the hard core rock music fans (although not all of them) just made the cause even more worthy. I used to love going to major rock gigs wearing a Sweet T.Shirt and quite often would get some kind of comment! Not always good but later on (Andy's Sweet) the comments were almost amazing to hear! At an Alice Cooper show at the Astoria some years ago a few people noticed the Andy Scott's Sweet shirt I had on and openly said as we passed on the stairs "Good band mate"!!! How come it's only now was in my mind, you missed so much, oh well, I didn't miss a thing and I'm not changing now. Short hair, no leather or shiny clothes, no Sweet....you're havin' a laugh, Long may it continue. ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

The nostalgia is so painfully sweet, we all have a common thread in our worlds apart lives. My memories for exact moments have faded but I can relate to each
and every story like it's my own, thanks for sharing everyone.

I can remember someone in the know telling me that a BIG Sweet fan got to ride in the same car as Andy and in total awe of the moment, wet himself! Some years
ago now mind you. I hope that's not too inappropriate to divulge?
Not a single name mentioned!!

That snap was taken after the gig and I had a Brian Connolly Tour shirt slung over my shoulder (that I still have today!) in a very hot dressing room with all
the other band members there plus 3 other fans and the owner of the club also! Hot.
Brian had a pink Roller. Steve had a green lookin' Roller. Mick had a Mercedes Benz. Andy had a Scimitar. At around the 1974 period anyway. Andy had a nice Volvo last time I know of, that's what we went to London in anyway? Kevin drove up there and Andy drove back and we dropped Steve G off on route some place. I remember it had started snowing aswell as I was dropped off. A good experience for me in alot of ways. Thanks Kevin. (You got free brandy that night now I think about it, by the bottle too) Cheers.

Well, the very first TOUCH wiff Sweet was about early 72 I guess...was COCO..permanantely on air over here ...but not only this...relatives of mine used to
keep a Beo (those Indian Birds!) who was named Koko..so eachtime the wireless was on and the tune came up, this bird went wild...
K! Later on it was Little Willy, which atracted me 7 years old...as my than "beloved" gals surename was Willhelm...Little Willy...was the perfect soundtrack to my...hardly wet dreams then .lol.. but Blockbuster got me hard...that was the time when I used to sneak into my elder cousins Teenmags..and the make-up faces moved something inside this little boy...asI used to kick my cousins on birthday meetings or so..to use their make-up cases/boxes!?...and then stand out on the streets...trying to cause attention by the passing ...which we did of course...(I was the only boy! sorounded by more than four cousins..and wearing ...probably the most outragerous facepaint...lol well they were still there wif Hellraiser...but Alice Cooper was a bit more...y`know...and then came March 73..and SLADE! Sweet were still there...all the time...till, lets say...Call me....??? OK finaly they had a massive influence on me...no doubts! |

I was 10 in 1971,very intr in music and football.Heard the Funny Funny song,WoW,since than I got Sweet in my heart. On norvegian t.v I also saw the league cup
final between ASTON VILLA and spurs.Spurs won 2v0,but for me it was VILLA from that day.I can`´t explain how much VILLA and SWEET have affected my life, for
the most in a very good gratitude.I have been at VILLA PARK several times and also been on several Andy and Brian gigs here in Scandinavia. But it is the first
time I go outside Scandinavia for to see a Sweet gig when I came to England june 19th.Over the years there have been some tragedys in my family, like in the
most other familys, but the music of SWEET have always been a very good comfort.THE LIFE GOES ON!!I think I am the only fan from Norway who came to Bilston,so I
hope I will have a good time with the fans who I know of name over the years, but never meet.See ya.!!

Moi? I was a bit of a late starter really. I'd been hearing Sweet for a couple of years around 72, 73 but it wasn't really until
Blockbuster came along that I got a bit more serious. I remember my best mate at the time, Carl Bees was just as much into Slade (and in our school it was Sweet OR slade, you couldn't be into both), so we'd spend hours playing the 45's of both bands and arguing the toss. My canvas backpack had Sweet on it and of course his had Slade. But every Tuesday lunchtime, it was a 'must' to listen to the new Top 20, and again on Sunday afternoons (in FM Stereo if you were lucky enough to bag Dad's 'Hi-Fi' system). Then I kinda drifted away to listen more to Supertramp, ELO etc in the later '70's. I got 'back in' when I saw they were advertised to play at the Bristol Bierkeller. It was 1990 (or 91?) and I remember hearing all those great songs again and my hair just standing on end. I couldn't believe how good it all sounded again, and not long after that, at a London gig, I first met young Kevin Smith. Then in 1994 came the first website and....well, you know. |
