RIGHT SHUT UP A MOMENT!

This is a thread about Sweet changing your life and you lot are waffling away like it's a chatroom!!!!! So let me in a minute.

I went to the birthday celebration at the Hard Rock Cafe (1999) that Dave Glover organised in honour of Brian after he had passed on bless him. It was there I met Steve Priest for the first time. He and Woody had chatted on his messageboard often but I was amazed when he stepped out of the taxi at the Hard Rock where I was waiting on Woody's head. Steve said: "Woody!" shook his hand and he continued, "I've been dieing to meet you." I was gobsmacked. Back then I was just a hat, so I didn't expect any recognition, but I also wasn't expecting Steve to acknowledge Woody with such a sincere greeting. Several hours later Woody strolled up towards Green Park Tube Station and I clearly heard him say "It doesn't get better than this!"

None Sweet fans will say "How sad is that!", but it was an amazing night. I met several people that night who would become firm friends, but apart from Woody I was only worn by Steve Priest.

I went from being a hat to becoming The Hat.

From that moment on my life was changed forever.

Sweet changed my life in many ways. I loved the 'outrageous' way they looked on Top of the Pops when I was growing up, and of course I loved the songs. I always played the 'b' sides of the singles and often preferred those to the 'a' sides.
Thanks to those 'b' sides and their albums, I was influenced by the heavy rock sound and this in turn got me into playing the guitar.
Seeing Sweet at Hammersmith when I was 14 was the most fantastic experience I've ever had at a gig, and I'll never forget it. As I've already mentioned elsewhere on here (yawn

) I bought a cherry red Gibson 335 cos Andy played one.
In 2001/2002 I discovered the internet and, Woody's website and of course Stewart's site and, this forum. The sheer euphoria of being able to converse with other Sweet fans was fantastic. But the one thing that stands out, (and you will probably laugh at this cos most of you have met him and Andy), was when I ordered Steves book as soon it came out. I wrote him a letter and asked him to sign it to 'Andy' (me), When it arrived and I saw that he had signed it, it made my decade. It is one of my most prized possessions. I've still yet to meet Andy and Steves Sweet are friends on my bands myspace, but Sweet changed my life, and still are changing it!

Thanks everyone for your comments re the bands website, we just love playing. It's all thanks to Sweet for providing the inspiration. My son who is also in the band, loves Sweet as much as I do and 'hates' me cos I saw them live twice! lol but the strange thing is, he will play all my Sweet albums and without me prompting him, he will pick out the same songs I like as his favourites! Songs like Set me Free, Heartbreak today, Burn on the flame, Windy City, Funk it up and Hard times. He's a real chip off the old block! lol
I have to thank you too, Woody, cos yours was the first Sweet website I found, and as I mentioned above, that was another life changing Sweet moment, suddenly discovering so many likeminded people was a revalation. I'm also really going to try to get to one of Andy's Sweet gigs soon, as I would love to meet Andy, if only to say thanks for some great guitar playing

Things that helped Sweet to change my life:
The first popsingle I ever bought was Soley Soley from Middle of the Road. As an 8 year old when Poppa Joe was first on Dutch TopPop I thought (from a distance spotting a blond) that it was the new MotR single. But hey, it wasn't and from that day on I never bought another MotR single and did not miss a Sweet (4piece) single.
After buying Poppa Joe I found a PJ sleeve on the street and I used it to cover my schoolbible with it !
My mom constantly refering to Steve as 'my girlfriend' due to the outfits and vocals he did in the crazy seventies on TV.
Me buying a Sweet T-shirt, while on holiday in London with my parents in the punk-summer of '76, as a souvenir.
My brother (that I shared a room with 'till we both were over 20) always telling me not to play Sweet when he was in the room, 'cause he hated it. Years later he confessed that he actually quite liked them, but as a brother he wanted to annoy his younger brother.
After Brain left the band, I left the band too. I bought the 3piece albums years later in secondhand LP stores. I remember seeing a poster for a BC (?) Sweet concert when I was in Berlin with a student-trip in 1985 and thinking, hey I'd love to see that, but I was due to the trip-schedule.
Then with me surfing the web more frequently since 2000 you guys on this lovely forum brought back the interest in Sweet what it is now. I had been playing the Sweet music at least once a week from 1972 'till then, but newer versions of Sweet were not for me.
My first Sweet gig was in Bergen Op Zoom a few years ago and guess what: my brother accompanied me !

☆☆☆☆JANUARY 18th1997☆☆☆☆ I was at Basingstoke train station on my way to the Sheppards Bush Empire to see SWEET.
Not a problem for most people normally? The train rolled into the station and as usual I went for the 'buffet' car. A nice pint and a cigarette was in order.
But as I looked through the widow into the carriage it was all black and white......STRIPES!!
Yep, Newcastle UTD had just drawn 2-2 with Southampton! (and I hate Scumthampton).
There was this small problem for me over any other passengers that day, they all boarded any other carriage other than the 'buffet' carriage, myself you see had a minor problem in that I was wearing the leather jacket with the metal bars down the front plus other metal type trim over the shoulders and cuffs. I just thought sod it, I've as much right to use the bar as they did?
As I entered the automatic door I was greeted by about 20 or more Geordies singing "Come On, Come On.....Come On...."
(Gary Glitter)............ but I quickly explained to them I was off to London to see the SWEET.

So..........they all started singing Blockbuster, Teenage Rampage, The Ballroom Blitz and most if not all the SWEET hits they could remember. All very well but this was all going on as at the same time they were taking the buffet car apart. Doing flying goalkeeper saves through the automatic doors even if they judged it wrong and they were actually shut! I had my photo taken with all of them and they made sure I never bought a single drink the whole way there. They even gave a Saints fan a nose bleed for me!!
On arrival at Waterloo Station five or six of them asked about the SWEET gig, and sure enough later on at the Empire those five or six turned up to the gig and said they'd loved it.
What a nice bunch of lads in the end.......but it could have so easily been a different story.

At the Hard Rock café, London on Tuesday, October 5th 1999, the event to commemorate Brian Connolly there were many well known faces from bands of the 70's. This included Steve Priest, Dave Hill and many others.
After meeting most of them I was sitting at the bar feeling a tad bit hungry I got chatting to this well rounded suited up business man who felt the same way.
We had a freebie burger and chatted for some time before he finally announced that he was Dave Mount, the original drummer in Mud!!
I was quite surprised to say the least.
Incidentally, Dave Hill stayed in a back room. When I went in he was sort of laying back drinking a cup of tea? Ah the memories.

I get better and better looking every day...... I cant wait for tomorrow!!
