It was Hammersmith in 1978. My mate at school had somehow got hold of 2 tickets, I think a friend of his brothers had won 2 tickets in a fan club competition
and had 2 to get rid of. Being only 14, I tentatively asked my mum and dad if I could go and, after assuring them we would be staying with my mates aunt and
uncle and would be dropped off and picked up later outside the 'Odeon' they said yes!!
I didn't sleep the night before, and we took the day off school and travelled to London by train from Norwich. We were in row F and I remember the comedian support act being booed off amid chants of 'We want Sweet' until around 9pm, the lights dimmed and my heart was in my mouth. As the synth intro to Action began, the curtains opened........I remember the lights being visable on the amps, and figures moving in the dark, then suddenly there were pyro's and lights, and SWEET were there in front of me..... everyone was out of their seats and there was Andy with his 'Union Jack' Gibson 335, Brian in a black satin suit, Steve with his Gibson Firebird bass and Mick behind his silver Ludwig double bass drum kit. we climbed over a row of seats as Yesterdays Rain started up, and the rest is history. Set me free, Sweet FA, all the great songs from Levelheaded, which I promptly bought the next day. I had hoped they would play Burn on the flame, as it was, and still is in my favourite top 5 Sweet songs, but, I had no complaints.... and to finish with Windy City just blew me away. Andy kicked a beer can into the crowd and they linked arms and thanked us for being there. Then it was over. I couldn't speak! My mate who was a drummer just kept saying 'Mick is the best, that guy is brilliant' We didn't sleep that night, as we talked about the gig reliving it over and over again. I will never forget it, in fact I've gone all 'goose bumpy' now just typing this! lol I saw Sweet again at the Lyceum 3 years later. We were right down the front, and stage right, Andy's side. I didn't really know what to expect, as Brian had left, and wasn't sure if they would concentrate on Cut above the rest and Waters Edge. Andy just walked on and said 'It's been 3 years since we last played England, so tonight we're gonna have a +#%%*+% good time!' Straight into Ballroom Blitz and this time we got Burn on the flame and Burning someone else will, and all the heavy stuff I was in heaven, it was fantastic. At the end, Andy smashed his black Strat, Steve yelled 'London you're the greatest in the universe' Mick threw his sticks into the crowd and they left the stage. I haven't seen Andy's Sweet, as my life has been very up and down these last few years and Ive not been in a position to to afford the travel or buy tickets etc, but I live in hope to maybe meet him one day at a gig, if only to buy him a pint to say thanks for some great music and for providing me with inspiration to play. I even bought a Gibson 335 cos I love the way they sound and look. Cheers guys, I'll never forget those gigs |

Some nice stories there. Unfortunately I never saw the original band. It nearly happend as Steve and Brian where arrested in Belgium, but I got pneumonia and
was too ill. I cried days, so disappointed.
After that it was only in 2000 that I saw ASSweet for the first time. It made impact and from then on the travelling started. At my second gig I got Bruce's drumsticks. I thanked him, because he had to dig them out of a case. The roadies cleared the stage already. I thanked him and there we stood, till Bruce asked with a cheeky smile: don't you want me to sign them? Yes, of course LOL. Doris from the GMB must have the pic still, she was with me. I lost it due to a pc crash. At later gigs I started to collect the plexs that Andy throws in the audience. Oh yes, I have been on my knees grabbing LOL After a Hamburg gig with my husband and several of the GMB, a woman jumped on my husband as a tiger. Holding him on both arms...Hans thought she was escaped from somewhere I saw the band most with Jeff, then Toni and now Pete.
Steve Priest - Sweet...He is back on the road
again

Raimo E wrote: You beat me there Raimo, but only with two days - the Stockholm gig was October 5th 1974 if I'm not mistaken. I can't remember much details though, but I remember being extremly happy and that we had to be "escorted" by my friends mother. (We were 12 years old, so I can understand our parents now) But the following year I was allowed to go without "adult escort" after a long lecture from my Father and after I had promised to come straight home and *not* go to any hotel... |
