He always comes across to me as a smug tosser and I get an overwhelming desire to punch him in the face whenever I see him. Anyone else feel the same?
He's wearing a new toupee though...which was nice.

Nicky Chinn - the boy wonder |

I saw Nicky Chinn on a Karen Carpenter documentary the other day, evidently claiming to be bessie mates with her.

I see him as a one who just wanted to make money, to get famous. Business man, a shark, who would walk over dead bodies if he had too, but there are tons of
that kind.

I agree john he is a smug tosser!! who talks out his own back side I have more respect for a horse than him!! he works only for one thing and thats money and
the fact that he says stuff about other artists like that is a load of crap... he has a big ego and he will do anything to keep it big!

He's the typical little rich tosser who found something to play with with Daddy's money. As Steve says in his book, he even treated Chapman with contempt to start with (for f**ks sake Mike, get me another drink) What's he ever done on his own? not much that i've heard of, though i'd be interested to know. Yes, the temptation to give him slap is there, but i could be wrong, he may be a lovely bloke!! |

I don't have anything against Chinn as such. Yeah I agree he's a smug barsteward, but despite him belittling Chapman at times, Chapman used him to get
where he is today, and in turn, Sweet used them both to make their gains. He may not seemed to have done much in the greater scheme of things, but without him,
we may not all be here arguing the toss about him and looking foreward to a show and a party in Bilston.
I do think though that without Sweet, he probably wouldn't have been able to be as smug as he is. Shades of Its A Wonderful Life methinks. Cheers. Ewan. GET OUTA MY F***ING WAY! |

I think the strongest indication as to what kind of person Nicky Chinn is, is the fact that Mike Chapman went on to work with other artists (Blondie, Baby
Animals ). I haven't seen Nicky Chinn's name on a record label in a long time.

If I remember rightly, it came about 4th out of 6 songs just to become the UK entrant. I also remember that it was lucky to get 4th cos it was an awful song.

I think he's really lovely. But nowhere near as nice as Karen Carpenter who must have the loveliest voice ever.

We have a couple of cats and one of them crept into the house and then crept out again, as they do, and I started singing Muds The Cat Crept In. Then I started
wondering about songs that were hits for the Chinn and Chapman team. I wondered if Chapman had more to do with some songs more than others. A bit like the
Lennon McCartney songs. You can sort of tell which of their songs were mainly done by Lennon, and which Paul Macca did most of the work on. Most of the Sweets
songs (especially latter) that they did were pretty damn brilliant, but some of the songs (like Cat Crept In) were a bit less than average, so I wonder if the
less good songs they did were more Chinn influenced than Chapman.

Nicky was the one who stumped a fairly sizeable chunk of his own cash to get the Sweet's career kickstarted. Whilst it might be so that Chapman was the
musical brains of the outfit, it was Nicky's business acumen that got the band ahead of the pack. Of course, history may bear out that Chinn and Chapman
did better financially out of the whole deal than Sweet ever did but that's business. I think in the early days the band was actually very appreciative of
Nicky's assistance and I believe Brian asked him to be godfather to his first born. Of course, time and perceptions change, and there's a bitterness
now evident when Nick is spoken of- Phil Wainman left the hitmaking arrangement for business rather than musical reasons, so there's plenty of fodder for
the view that Nicky was business first sentiment second. He did however, have limited success writing lyrics before Chapman-Sweet happened along- he wrote some
of the tunes with Manfred Mann's Mike D'Abo for the movie There's A Girl in My Soup.

Im sure you're right Mick otherwise Im sure Chapman would've dropped him at the earliest opportunity. And I guess he cant help coming accross as a smug
bastard with the sincereity of Tony Blair. No-one gets on in the music biz (or indeed any biz) without being ruthless and stomping on a few people and I guess
years later, it's natural for those who lost out/gained less to look back with resentment.
Accepting that, did he actually write any lyrics though? If he was the sleeping partner in the Dynamic Duo then fine. It's a bit like Brian. He shares co-credits for songwriting but I suspect he didn't really contribute. Apart from some dodgy claim to own a song that nearly got them sued (Always forget which one, was it Jeannie or Spotlight?) everyone goes real quiet over what credits Brian really had as a writer. Chinnichap - whoever they may be - did wonderful things to my growing years for which I will ever be thankful.

That's true Mick.
I'm sure that without Chinnchap Sweet wouldnt'have had a better start, that's actually a fact, no? No matter that the first hits were too poppy, they were a band who needed songwriters and the two songwriters needed a band at that time. How it was with the money, ..who can tell, I guess that the Chinnchap duo was more businesslike and know to use their money better also than our four Sweeties?

That team were responsible for some of my favourite music of all time (not just with The Sweet), so I'll give them some leeway. I know they exploited their
acts but I guess that was par for the course in those days. What I would like to know is why Sweet did not record for RAK but all the other Chinnichap acts
did. I think they got their RCA contract before they were teamed up with their writers but it is still odd, don't you think?
Anyway, as for Chinn's later career, Wikipedia says (soz, can't remove the underlines!): Despite an international #1 with "Mickey" (Toni Basil) in 1982, Chinn and Chapman gradually separated during the early 1980s, and Chinn did not continue much longer in the music industry. However, in 1983, he co-wrote "Dancing in the Dark", a UK hit for Kim Wilde, and teamed up with Chapman and Holly Knight penning Tina Turner's 1985 single release, "Better Be Good to Me". In all, however, Chinn's fourteen year stint had made him co-writer of over forty UK Top 40 hits.
What do I know about music? Sweet FA!!!
